The Birds by Aristophanes adapted by Yvette Nolan

Theatre@York | Sandra Faire & Ivan Fecan Theatre | March 2016

A powerful adaptation of one of western theatre's earliest comedies: the classical Greek play by Aristophanes. Nolan re-situates the birds in the play to Turtle Island (North America), recasting the two humans who visit the land of the birds as colonizers-come-lately, intent on remaking this Indigenous paradise in their own image. This comic fable brings a 21st century audience inside an Indigenous subjectivity, underscoring the striking realities underlying Indigenous and settler relationships. The production is a creative collaboration between theatre, dance, digital media, and music students. Learn more about The Birds.

This is War by Hannah Moscovitch

Theatre@York | Studio Theatre | November 2016

An insightful and emotional look into the embittered psyche of soldiers in the aftermath of combat. Master Corporal Tanya Young, Captain Stephen Hughes, Private Jonny Henderson, and Sergeant Chris Anders have lived through an atrocity while holding one of the most volatile regions in Afghanistan. As each of them is interviewed by an unseen broadcasting organization, they recount their version of events leading up to the horrific incident with painful, relenting replies. What begins to form is a picture of the effects of guilt and the psychological toll of violence in a war where the enemy is sometimes indiscernible.

The Devised Theatre Festival

Inverted Spotlight devised by typo theatr | Studio Theatre | February 2017

Come one, come all to witness a circus filled with thriving and successful spectacles and a range of hypnotizing artists. It is one of the world’s most renowned circuses, until a catastrophic fire puts the circus and its patrons in flames. Inverted Spotlight interactively follows the lives and personal struggles of circus workers unveiling isolation through the backstage lens of loneliness within themselves and society. An intricate tale in a non-linear order encourages a perceptional take on piecing together five unique narratives co-existing under one big top.
